AFP, Week 10

THERE’S A GAME ON THURSDAY NIGHT THIS WEEK!!!

I’ll try to add some thoughts on Wednesday that can live up to that opening sentence.  But it’s gonna be tough.

UPDATE:  Okay, I should probably type a few things this week.

First off, it’s Broncos/Chefs week.  This is BIG!  I mean, a division crown is at stake!  The first team to 6-10 has an inside track to the SUPER BOWL!  Lousy division or not, I will enjoy a very special feeling (even down there!) if Tebow can somehow pull out a victory in Arrowhead.  That will tick so many of you off – admit it.  I can’t wait.

Week 9 Winner:  Dave Starkweather.  I know – we have a firm “No Starkweathers” tiebreaker rule, but look at alternatives.  I’m a much too awesome (and modest) an AFP host to name myself.  Clark’s taking KU football shots in his entries and we don’t want to reward a bully, especially from those who follow mid-major conference schools like MU.  And Kevin STILL hasn’t served up any meatloaf.  So…congrats, Dave.  By not being me, Clark or Kevin – you earned it!

Scotty Ray’s sitting all alone atop the standings.  God help us all.

Deadline for Week 10 picks:  Thursday night, 7:20pm CST

AFP, Week 9

Fun starts a minute or so in…

This marks the halfway point. Week 9. Smack dab in the middle.

We’ll give the Week 8 win to Shelby Lynn and Zee…Gordon’s daughter and…who is Zee again? Someone Gordon knows. (EDIT: Zee is Bruce! I should have figured that out.) Anyway, further proof (along with Sheila’s hot start to the season) that everyone in Gordon’s life is a football expert! (Except…well, Gordon.)

Kevin also went 11-2. Which earns him a tie for the weekly lead, but…still no meatloaf. Sorry, Kevin.

Dan and Scotty are still tied atop the overall leaderboard. I’d still bet the house on “the field” over these two. Then again, it’s a pretty crappy house.

Deadline is noon, Sunday. And just a note for some of you (like Matt Thomas) who keep forgetting to make picks…I’d like to really apologize for not sending you email reminders. Please shoot me an email (chesty@chestysite.com) if you aren’t getting weekly emails. I’d be happy to add you to the weekly reminder list. I didn’t ask for emails at the beginning of the year, so I’m just working from addresses in the first week of entries and some guesswork. Sorry about that. Then again, another note for those of you (Matt Thomas): NFL FOOTBALL HAS BEEN PLAYED ON SUNDAYS FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE! YOU NEED TO BE REMINDED WHEN FOOTBALL GAMES ARE? DO YOU NEED TO BE REMINDED ON A DAILY BASIS THAT THE SUN MIGHT WILL RISE TOMORROW? THAT YOU’LL BE LATE TO WORK? THAT WOMEN THROW DRINKS IN YOUR FACE WHEN YOU TALK TO THEM? CAUSE THESE THINGS ARE ALL CONSISTENT – THEY NEVER CHANGE! AND I’M YELLING REALLY LOUD RIGHT NOW!

(I miss Matt Thomas.)

AFP, Week 8

I’m late with the update this week, so here’s your make-up gift…the important AFPer-created-PSA of the week:

As an election season starts up, it seems like there’s a lot of fake/weird competition to see which candidate or party can be more “American.”  A dude sitting alone in his basement, complaining to a camera that he can’t eat more-than-enough at a buffet?  THAT, my friends, is as AMER-I-FREAKIN’-CAN as you can be!!!

Congrats to Week 7 winner, Lynn Nahrebeski.  She – along with Dave, Shane and Trent – went 11-2.  Very nice.  Lynn wins the tiebreaker the same way I won a lot of trophies in youth sports – sympathy.  She’s got two 6-win weeks this season and only a couple double-digit weeks.  She needs any help she can get.  Plus, Lynn’s not proud.  She’ll take our pity.  (Also keep in mind, we have a no-tiebreakers-for-Starkweathers rule, Shane would admit that he’s a knucklehead, and Trent… Trent is like 8 years old (frozen in time, in my mind)…I mean, I’m not saying Trent’s young, but his FATHER hasn’t even reached puberty… so, he’s got plenty of time.)

Congrats, Lynn!

Scotty Ray has caught up to Dan in the overall lead.  I’d say it’s impressive that Scotty’s been following the NFL enough this season to be this high, considering all the time he’s investing in the “Fire Gill!” movement.  Seriously, Scott does NOT like KU’s current head coach.  You can have your economy-protesting events all you want, Scotty’s “Occupy Turner Gill” rally (Scott, a tent, and a long power cord for a TV in Gill’s front yard) probably means he’s gone too far.

Scotty and Dan in a leaderboard fight.  These two go back a way – it’s just another episode in a long list of battles.  Just like back in the day, when they’d wrestle on the floor of their Orchard Corners apartment.  Only this time, they’re wearing more clothes.  And less baby oil.  Go get ‘em!

I hope you all enjoyed “Tebow Week 1″ in this “Tebow Season.”  The more you resist it, the more it will bother you.  Just try to sit back and enjoy it.

Have a great week!

AFP, Week 7

Standings are updated.  This week’s games below.  Man, I’m on TOP OF IT this week!  And just at the right time – it’s a big week.  It’s the Sunflower Showdown.  And it’s TEBOW WEEK!  I can’t wait!

Congrats to cousin Lauri on her Week 6 win.  She was the only one of us to go for 12 wins.  That’s 12-1!  Nicely done.  Add in a Cardinals trip to the World Series, and Lauri’s having a good week.

Dan moves into the overall lead on his own.  I’ll say it early on this year, just so everyone’s on the same page – we can NOT let this happen!  Catch Dan.  Please.

I’ve got nothing.  Have a great Tebow! week!

AFP, Week 6

I’m late in getting games up this week (which is to say, I’m right on time).  To help make up for it, I have this:

Update: Congrats to Week 6 winner – MY MOM!  Yep, it came down to her and bro-in-law Kevin, as they both got 11 right last week.  And after calculating the week’s heady tiebreaker, I had to go with dear old Mom.  I’ll continue to go with Mom in that battle, until Kevin can prove he can make a meatloaf like Mom can.  And when he starts calling me when I’m sick to see if I’m doing okay.  And when he learns to gently put a band-aid on my boo-boo.  Kevin, you’ve got a LOT TO LEARN, my friend, before I’ll start calling you my mom the Week 6 winner.

Stacey said I should just delay breaking the tie until Thanksgiving, and make them battle it out mano a momo.  But that seems a little dark.  (Plus I worry about the beatdown Kevin would suffer.)

Plus – we all miss this update – THIRTY-THREE of you are losing to my Mom.

Danny’s taken the overall lead, all by himself.  Dan, Matt, Brent, Greg…these are all familiar names at the top.  We’re getting far enough into it, where the seasoned veterans take over.  And I’m not just talking about Dan’s greying hair.

Have a great week!  Deadline is noon, Sunday.
